MEXICO - The head of the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Mario Aguilar Sanchez, believes there is capacity to increase the production of tilapia in the country.

Mr Aguilar Sánchez considered that the promotion and development of aquaculture will have a great opportunity to contribute to growth in the sector and in particular to the production of tilapia, which is one of the food products of high nutritional quality and high protein available to Mexicans.

Mexico has a huge potential for development as, for example, Campeche state has 523 kilometers of coastline.

He stressed that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has stated that in the next decade the production of fisheries and aquaculture will be greater than the production of beef cattle, pigs and poultry in its entirety.

Mr Aguilar Sánchez argued that it is true that there are challenges ahead, there is much to do, but Campeche state, its authorities, its entrepreneurs and fishermen have the full backing of the President and Secretary of the SAGARPA, Enrique Martinez y Martinez.

Today we have more than 74 tons of tilapia and we have the conditions to double production which will enable more consumption and in turn help the National Crusade Against Hunger.

Mr Aguilar Sanchez thanked support bank Multivaand FIRA, which will provide funding for this project.
